The Right Succumbs to Godwin's Law. aka Barack != Hitler where Barack = Barack and Hitler = Hitler.

Godwin's Law - "As a Usenet discussion grows longer, the probability of a comparison involving Nazis or Hitler approaches one."

For those unfamiliar with Usenet, before blogs and web 2.0 social network driven sites we had newsgroups such as Usenet. However I'd say Godwin's law can apply to any dialogue and I'd also add that the second anyone pulls a nazi comparison out of the bag, it's pretty much indicative that they've completely given up hope on winning any valid argument.

Well, here we go folks, the comparison's are rolling in from the right from the ignorant no-nothings to ellected officials. Keep in mind, there were some lefties out there who did the same thing to Bush, and I'm in no way going to defend their inepititude at having an intellegent argument without needing to use the weight of genocide and a horrible global embarassment lightly.

First up a Congressman from... ... Georgia. (SUPRISE!)
Georgia congressman warns of Obama dictatorship [via AP]

Rep. Paul Broun (R) Georgia makes numerous allusions to nazism but this is my favorite part of the article:
"We can't be lulled into complacency," Broun said. "You have to remember that Adolf Hitler was elected in a democratic Germany. I'm not comparing him to Adolf Hitler. What I'm saying is there is the potential."
Seriously Paul? You really think that "has potential" crap puts enough distance for you to be able to make such claims?

It get's much worse from there sadly, as we stumble down the backwater genepool to more colloquial obama=hitler comparisons.

meet effluent. For a man whose father was stationed in germany during the 1950s you'd think he'd be a bit cautious about hitler comparisons, but no such luck. An op-ed article on townhall.com apparently inspired our friend to repost some of his photoshop art below:

charming stuff huh?
Here is effluent's full blog post where he was apparently inpired by a quote by an dead french dude enough to call the author (Thomas Sowell) a respected scholar instead of acknowledging him as a conservative propaganda spouter who has claimed there's no gender bias or income disparity. Obama Compared to Hitler [via nomansblog.com]

The list goes on and on with this kind of dribble. Frankly I found all of this just trying to find the Broun quote. Not just Obama, but tons and tons of political hitler comparisons.
A UC-Santa Barbara report on the topic from 2005:

THE PRESIDENT NAZI: How U.S. Presidents and Their Political Parties are Compared to Hitler and the Third Reich by Megan Gallagher

Seriously folks, NONE of us should be comparing anything to nazi germany nor anybody to hitler unless it's REALLY REALLY REALLY like those things. If for no other reason than IT'S THE FINAL RESORT OF ANYBODY WHO CAN'T ACTUALY MAKE A VALID FUCKING POINT.

It's been going on since the fall of nazism, and it's used in situations big and small. I think as a rule, unless there is genocide NO MORE FULFILLING GODWIN'S LAW. Please, it just proves you really haven't figured out a way to get your point across otherwise, and if you don't get your point across without summoning up the guilt, shame, horror of the holocaust, it may be time to consider that you don't have a point.

Which leads me to The Dodds Corollary:
"When debating a particular subject, if a comparison or implied connection is drawn between the opponent's argument and Hitler and the Nazi Party, the maker of that statement is automatically discredited and the debate is automatically lost by the person or group who referenced the connection to Hitler or the Nazis."
